Visiting Cape Hatteras Lighthouse: Climbing, History & Photo Tips

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the most famous landmark on Hatteras Island and one of the most recognizable lighthouses in America. Its black-and-white spiral stripes rise above the dunes in Buxton, just a short drive south of Avon NC. Here's how to visit, climb, and photograph it, plus why Avon makes the perfect home base.

    Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Facts

    • Height: About 198 feet, the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States.
    • Built: First lit in 1870 to warn ships away from Diamond Shoals, the "Graveyard of the Atlantic."
    • Steps: 257 steps from the base to the top.
    • Managed by: The National Park Service as part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

How to Climb the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

Climbing the lighthouse is a bucket-list Outer Banks experience. The climb is seasonal, usually running from spring into early fall, with timed tickets sold on site or online. Climbs can close for high winds, heat, or lightning. Dates, hours, prices, and age or height rules can change, so check the National Park Service website before your visit.

    • Go early in the day. Tickets can sell out in summer, and mornings are cooler inside the tower.
    • Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. The iron stairs are steep and narrow.
    • Take your time. Landings with windows let you rest and enjoy the view on the way up.
    • At the top, you'll see the Atlantic, Pamlico Sound, Buxton Woods, and Cape Point.

    Visitor Center & Museum Tips

Start at the visitor center and the Museum of the Sea in the historic Double Keepers' Quarters. Exhibits cover shipwrecks, lifesaving crews, and the keepers who once tended the light. Restrooms, parking, and a bookstore are on site. Nearby, a short nature trail winds through the maritime forest.

    The Famous 1999 Lighthouse Move

When the lighthouse was built, it stood about 1,500 feet from the ocean. Over the next century, erosion ate away the beach until waves were crashing just over 100 feet from the tower. In 1999, engineers lifted the 4,800-ton lighthouse onto steel tracks and rolled it about 2,900 feet inland over 23 days. It was one of the largest structure moves in history. Stone markers show the original site, and granite stones from the old foundation now form a circle with the names of past keepers.

Best Photo Spots: Sunrise & Sunset

    • Sunrise: Shoot from the parking area and boardwalk as morning light hits the east side of the tower.
    • Sunset: The west side glows golden. Frame the lighthouse with dune grass in the foreground.
    • Original site: Walk toward the beach for a wide shot showing how far the tower traveled.
    • Night sky: On clear nights the light still sweeps overhead, and dark skies make for great stargazing photos.
